FAQ
Blow Fish Edit is a simple to use text editor that incorporates powerful encryption technology, in a Multi-Document Interface. In addition, Blow Fish Edit comes with tools that allow the user to encrypt, decrypt and destroy individual files.
Both the trial and full version use the Blowfish encryption algorithm.
- Trial: 32 bit encryption key, weak
- Registered: 448 bit encryption key, strong
Details on the Blowfish algorithm may be found at: http://www.schneier.com/blowfish.html
Blow Fish Edit uses alternative action message technology (Patent Pending), allowing the embedding of actions such as display alternate text, or destroy normal text.
When creating a new file the user is prompted for a "normal" password. The normal password is required to encrypt and decrypt the file. The user is also prompted for an optional "self-destruct" password and an alternative action:
- Display Alternate
- Display Alternate and Destroy Normal
The self destruction option my be omitted by clicking the "Skip" button.
Entering a self-destruct password and alternative action, allows the user to enter two sets of text, normal and alternate.
The normal password decrypts and displays both sets of text for editing.
The self-destruct password displays only the alternate text. The normal text is either overwritten with random data or left intact depending on the alternative action chosen.
Skipping the self-destruct password, forces Blow Fish Edit to display only a single text window.
